A Different Approach to Modern Architecture

Published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Pasticcio’ in the Flemish Architecture Institute, Antwerp, 21 February - 2 June 2014

OASE is a thematic journal on architecture, urbanism and landscape design and offers a significant contribution to the international professional discourse.

OASE 92 Codes and Conventions focuses on a generation of modern architects who have remained in the shadow of their famous contemporaries. These 'architects of the shadow canon’ developed an approach entirely their own, in which modern architecture was not seen as a radical opposite to convention and traditions, but as a reinterpretation of familiar typologies, compositional codes and tectonic principles.
Prominent authors describe how modern architects like Fernand Pouillon, Kay Fisker, Fernando Tavora and Giovanni Muzio were busy with the language of architecture and its recent and classical history. Their projects show an idiosyncratic search for continuity with pre-modernistic architecture. The architects of the shadow canon form a step toward a critical reflection on the role of historic codes and everyday conventions in contemporary design practice.
