15 & 16 June | Program Women in Architecture

Last year, nai010 announced the Documents and Histories project: a series of publications and events highlighting missing voices in architecture. To celebrate the first publication Women in Architecture, we are organizing a rich program of lectures, panel discussions, interactive discussions and drinks during the Rotterdam Architecture Month. We will start with a festive book launch on Thursday evening, June 15, at the New Institute, followed by an extensive substantive symposium on Friday, June 16, in collaboration with Architectuur Instituut Rotterdam (AIR).

Book launch June 15

As of June 15, Women in Architecture is available in the bookstores and that should be celebrated. During the book launch, the editors will discuss the this special project.

Women in Architecture is part of the Documents and Histories series, with which nai010 fills the gap in your bookcase and gives space to underexposed voices in architecture. Despite the diverse contributions of a large group of women, the narrative of architecture remains stubbornly masculine. In this publication, we show that women did play key roles in architectural history and pursued extraordinary careers. By compiling these stories, we added a new chapter to the Dutch architectural history.

Symposium June 16

The publication Women in Architecture encourages a new way of looking, researching and discussing. The symposium includes lectures, panel discussions and interactive discussion sessions with the audience. Catja Edens will provide the introductory lecture. She will explore the invisibility of women in history through the concept of authorship and discusses how those gaps continue to the present day. This is followed by a panel discussion with amongst others Indira van 't Klooster, Lidewij Tummers and María Novas Ferradás, on the historical context in which women architects operated, what challenges they faced and how certain difficulties remain unsolved. A second panel discussion elaborates on the contemporary issues for a multi-voiced architectural sector with Setareh Noorani, Lara Schrijver, Saskia van Stein and Jolijn Valk. After the panels, the audience is invited to share knowledge, their own experiences and suggestions for a more diverse architecture sector, providing content for the next publication.
