> Artists and musicians in the Port of Rotterdam: how imagination prevailed
> How the last Quarantine Facility was saved from demolition
> A construction firm building castles in the air in the Port of Rotterdam

Built in the 1930s to prevent infectious diseases, the nationally listed Beneden Heijplaat Quarantine Facility in Rotterdam began to be used by artists in 1979. This book is a tribute to the art and culture within QI and a plea for the preservation of the studio and living spaces for artists in the changing city. It highlights the great diversity of the projects developed over four decades and the significance of QI as a creative hub. For years, the green peninsula was a pawn in the development of the Port of Rotterdam, and in 2024 the artists were fi nally forced to leave the QI site. With this book as a lasting monument, the authors aim to emphasize the importance of cultural incubators for Rotterdam’s identity.
