Last Saturday, we celebrated the publication of the Groningen Architecture City guide at Let’s Gro. The winner and loser of the Groningen Architecture City Quiz went home with the first copies. Yes, you read that right: even the loser. Because the person with the fewest points probably deserves the guide the most. They really have something to learn.
Were you unable to attend this weekend but would you like to test your knowledge of Groningen architecture and architectural history? Take the quiz online. Be warned: there are quite a few trick questions among the 32 questions!
Groningen has been an important city in terms of architecture and urban design for decades. In recent years, there has been frequent focus on current projects, such as the Forum Groningen, the Kunstwerf, the renewal of City Hall and the redevelopment of the Grote Markt – the heart of the city for a thousand years.
But Groningen has architectural treasures from every period, ranging from the Martinitoren and medieval guest houses, to 19th-century ‘grain cathedrals’ (imposing villa farmhouses with an enormous adjoining granary), expressionist social housing and avant-garde pavilions in public spaces. Apart from these – and many more – architectural highlights, the guide also gives tips for the most enjoyable restaurants and cafés, urban locations under development and hidden oases to unwind in.
