Almere Architecture City: New City Walks

Open Monument Day Almere: presentation of new architectural walks

Especially for Open Monument Day, VVV Almere is proud to present six brand new architectural walks through various neighbourhoods of Almere on Saturday 13 September. These routes have been created by the staff of VVV Almere and carefully written by Ans van Berkum and Odette Breijinck – two experts who previously co-authored the guide Almere Architecture City.

The festive presentation will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the City Archives, where Alderman Kees Ahles will receive the first copies.

The walks have been compiled based on the rich experiences of the tourist office guides and supplemented with texts and photography from Almere Architectuur Stad. Together, they form an inspiring, handy package that allows residents and visitors to rediscover Almere as a city of experimental architecture. Each walk takes you past striking buildings and places that make Almere architecturally unique: Almere Haven, Eilandenbuurt, Filmwijk, Muziekwijk, Almere Poort and Regenboogbuurt.

The walks are published in a series of booklets – an initiative of ACM/VVV – designed by Jeroen Rep and featuring photography by Dürr and Van der Wijk. Art historian Odette Breijinck and author Ans van Berkum contributed to this project free of charge. For more information about the walks, visit openmonumentendag.nl.

About Almere Architecture City

Almere, the youngest city in the Netherlands, has always embraced ambitious construction projects. Everything had to be reinvented, as the city rose from the reclaimed land of the Zuiderzee.

Almere Architecture City showcases this ‘New Town’ through its top 100 buildings: from the eco-district of Oosterwold to Liesbeth van der Pol’s industrial Rooie Donders and from OMA’s (Rem Koolhaas) elevated City Centre to Marinus Boezem’s landscape artwork. Internationally renowned firms like Alsop, MVRDV, and SANAA are showcased, alongside Dutch icons such as Herman Hertzberger, Marlies Rohmer, and René van Zuuk.

Beyond the architectural wonders, the guide unveils the city’s hidden treasures, such as Europe’s pioneering transgender zebra crossing and the Klokhuis, designed by children. The guide also tells where you can find traces of the city’s history, such as at the Bivouac House where the quartermasters of the city of Almere lived. Dive into the stories behind these landmarks, uncovering fascinating facts and anecdotes that illuminate the spirit of Almere and its youthful monuments.

The guide is available in your local bookstore and in our webshop.
