This edition of the Noorderlicht Biennial explores the intricate relationship between technology, ecology, and heritage. Rapid technological advancements have a profound impact on biodiversity, social structures, and our shared history. With Machine Entanglements, Noorderlicht aims to raise awareness and spark dialogue: how does technology shape our lives, our landscapes, and our collective memory? Acid Clouds is one of the exhibitions on view this summer. Read more about the project and the book here.
The festive opening takes place during the weekend of July 11, 12, and 13, 2025. Mark your calendar and keep an eye on this page for updates and more information.
Noorderlicht aims to raise awareness and spark dialogue with Machine Entanglements: how does technology shape our lives and our environment? Visitors are invited to reflect on their own position within these technological transitions. Roosje Klap, director of Noorderlicht, explains: “This anniversary edition offers a necessary reflection on the world we live in. The works reveal just how deeply technology permeates our daily lives.”
At six locations across the Northern Netherlands – de Niemeyer-fabriek, het Tschumipaviljoen, Museum Dr8888, Museum Belvédère, Brouwerij Fortuna en De Proef – the participating artists each present a unique perspective on how technology shapes our world.
The official opening of the Noorderlicht Biennial will take place on 11 July 2025 in Friesland, followed by a festive weekend featuring performances, symposia, and special public programs on 12 July in Drenthe and 13 July in Groningen. Everyone is welcome.
