Get ready for fall with our new catalogue

Two fine books with fewer than two hundred pages each explore and explain the fundamentals of the spatial design profession from the perspective of two illustrious academic traditions. TU Delft does that with the book Basisbegrippen: Architectuur, Landschapsarchitectuur, Stedenbouw. Caroline Voet, architect and Leuven professor, analyzes in her design manual Dom Hans van der Laan in Practice the principles underlying the elementary architecture of Van der Laan, the man who brought architecture back to its pure spatial essence. I can hardly imagine a finer reflection on the fundamentals of the profession of spatial designer.

The publications in this autumn catalogue frequently deal with fundamental notions in spatial design and art. Joost Santen’s monograph, for instance, examines the most fundamental element in the visual arts: light, which for Van Santen was the central medium for his art. And in Come to Your Senses, the senses that register these elements are presented as fundamental instruments for teaching students, who learn with the publication how seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling and hearing can be utilized in their professional practice

In addition to these educational publications, our autumn catalogue pays ample attention to celebrating the results of this study and talent development: Buildings by Women: Rotterdam is a festive invitation, with the book in your pocket, to completely rediscover Rotterdam, through the eyes of the women who were also involved in building the city. Speaking of Rotterdam, the opening exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum’s new location celebrates how photographers from the nineteenth century onwards have depicted the small river town’s unprecedented growth to become an international port city. It is an ode both to the city and the photographers who have captured it. In addition, the book. Nieuwe iconen, in which design-publicist Jeroen Junte presents a host of experts who transform the canon of Dutch design into a colourful, diverse and multi-perspective parade. Expect to be surprised!
