Concrete, trespa, natural stone and mirror glass in all sorts of colours: the look and feel of Post 65 architecture cannot be captured in a single material. But how come? Building historian and author Ronald Stenvert will take you on a tour of Rotterdam’s most distinctive office towers, museum buildings and residential complexes. On Friday 22 November, guided by Ronald, we walk from the Maritime Museum, past the Coolse Poort and the former MeesPierson to Schouwburgplein with the Doelen and Theater Rotterdam. Via the urban renewal in the Old West, we will walk to the tour’s final destination: the Rotterdam Cultuurstad exhibition at OMI.
The excursion will be followed by the Rotterdam book launch of Bouwmaterialen 1940-1990 . In this publication, authors and historians Ronald Stenvert and Kees Somer bring together for the first time historical knowledge on post-war building materials and construction techniques. What is involved in the conservation, preservation and renewal of post-war architecture? Architectural historian Kees Somer explains the creation of this colourful publication, followed by informal drinks with room for questions and discussion.
