If Only You Knew. The First Generation of Women from Turkey in The Netherlands
If only you knew … – Bir bilsen ... in Turkish. This is how many women began their life stories when photographer Çiğdem Yüksel visited them.They’re women much like her grandmother, who left their homelands to forge a new life in the Netherlands. Yet, their narratives are noticeably absent from our visual archives.
On 28 September, nai010 publishers will publish If Only You Knew: a never-before-seen and told, rich women’s history – full of personal stories, unique photography, interviews and essays. Published in three languages – Dutch, English and Turkish – the book is part of a transmedia project by production agency Prospektor. The publication of the book launches the exhibition at the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam. From 28 September 2024 to 25 May 2024, the results of this multimedia project can be seen there.
